How to (Re)activate a 2016 Autodesk Perpetual License in 2026

Applies to: AutoCAD 2016, AutoCAD LT 2016, Revit 2016, Inventor 2016, 3ds Max 2016, and other Autodesk products with a 2016 perpetual standalone license — Last reviewed: 2026

1. Understanding the Situation in 2026

You legally own a perpetual Autodesk license from 2016. In principle, a perpetual license means you may use the software indefinitely. In practice, however, Autodesk has made reactivation of older versions increasingly difficult. Understanding these restrictions is essential before attempting anything.

Autodesk's official policy states: Autodesk 2016 products are past end-of-support and cannot receive new activation codes.
Although originally intended as a measure to prevent illegal (multiple) installations, Autodesk now misuses the mandatory activation requirement to remotely deactivate its perpetual licences: "For unsupported versions, you cannot get a new activation code to reactivate that version for any device."

The License Transfer Utility (LTU) was discontinued on 24 March 2025.
Autodesk officially retired the LTU application as of that date, removing another previously available path for moving a 2016 license to a new machine.

2. The Legal Situation in the EU: Software Resale and the ECJ Decision UsedSoft v. Oracle (Case C-128/11)

Within the EU, buying and selling a genuine perpetual software licence is entirely lawful, provided the seller deletes their copy, the licence was originally sold for an unlimited term against a one-time fee, and the full licence is transferred intact. No contract clause by a publisher can override this — it is a matter of EU law that supersedes individual licence agreements.

Within the EU, your rights as a perpetual licence holder are significantly stronger than in the US — regardless of whether you purchased your licence recently as a second-hand copy or originally from Autodesk years ago. Autodesk is well aware of the strong position that licence holders enjoy under European law, and many users report that persistent contact with Autodesk support — clearly referencing their EU rights and the ECJ ruling — has resulted in successful activation.

1
Sign in to your Autodesk Account.

manage.autodesk.com — Confirm the serial number and product key are visible under your account.

2
Open a support case via the Autodesk Help portal.

autodesk.com/support — Use the chat or phone option. Specifically state that you hold a valid perpetual license, that the product is registered to your account, and that you need assistance with activation on a replacement machine due to hardware failure or replacement.

3
Request escalation if the first agent cannot help.

Front-line support agents may follow a script that leads to a dead end. Ask to be escalated to a licensing specialist. Reference the fact that you have a legitimate registered perpetual license that is confirmed in your Autodesk Account — even if it is no longer visibly displayed in the current account interface, the registration record exists internally and Autodesk support can look it up.

Tip for support calls: Always have your serial number, product key, Autodesk Account email, and original proof of purchase ready before contacting support. Explicitly mention that you hold a registered perpetual license and that the product appears (or appeared) in your Autodesk Account. Avoid framing the conversation as a general enquiry — state specifically that you need a licensing resolution for a registered perpetual product.
